MARY NEXT: MATALIN MAY LEAVE WHITE HOUSE POST BY END OF YEAR
Fri Apr 26 2002 16:24:09 ET

In the second big blow to President Bush's staff this week, a senior White House official tells Ed Henry at ROLL CALL DAILY that top aide Mary Matalin may leave her job by the end of the year.

Matalin tells Henry that she has made no decision on the matter, but said that "no one ever thought I would stay for the whole term."

Matalin acknowledged that during a private lunch with outgoing Massachusetts Gov. Jane Swift (R) on Thursday, the subject of the White House aide's own departure came up. "I said, 'Someday I'll be in a new life'" as well.

But Matalin said she does not know exactly what that means right now. "I've got to sit down and think about it," she said.

But another senior White House official said Friday that Matalin will leave "by the end of the year."

The administration official downplayed the suggestion that Matalin's possible exit will be another blow to the President.

"Obviously every White House wishes it can have the same staff for eight years," said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "It just doesn't happen."

The official stressed that Matalin's departure is not "imminent," but that she has made it clear she will leave later in the year.

Matalin, the wife of Democratic strategist James Carville, has two young daughters and has repeatedly said they are her top priority.
