 STUDENTS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TOLD TO DROP PANTS; SEARCH FOR BLOOD Tue Apr 30 2002 10:05:25 ET K-NEWS radio in Plam Springs reports: Indio, California police say nothing was done wrong at Hoover Elementary School Thursday, but some parents of Hoover students are still asking questions. It all started around mid-morning Thursday, when a custodian found some blood on the toilet in the bathroom in a kindergarten class. Desert Sands School District Spokeswoman Darlene Dolan told K-NEWS Radio, none of the kids admitted having any problems. School officials say the amount of blood was substantial, but they would not specify how much blood was found. So, one at a time, the 17 kindergarten kids were taken to the nurse's office and asked to pull down their pants so the school principal, school nurse, and assistant nurse could check to see who was bleeding. Dolan says there was concern that one of the students might need medical attention. Finally, the little girl who was bleeding admitted she had fallen off a scooter at home, and suffered some cuts to her knee. School officials were not able to find the injured child during the visual examinations. Indio police were called to ensure the situation was handled properly by school district officials. Police did meet with some of the parents of the kids, and so has the school principal. School District officials did not call the parents prior to asking the kids to drop their pants, and did not send a letter home to parents explaining the situation. After 17 kids had been visually checked by the nurse, assistant nurse, and school principal, the young girl who was bleeding stepped forward. Dolan says the girl had fallen off a scooter at home, and cut her knee. Dolan says school officials were worried that one of the kids might need immediate medical attention. Indio police were called to make sure everything was handled properly. Dolan says everything was done according to school district procedures. Dolan says school officials did not have time to call the parents of the kids, before asking the kids to drop their pants. The school district did not send a letter home to the parents, explaining what happened. The school principal and Indio police did speak with some of the parents. END |
