Homeland Security Headquarters Building Mulled Fri Aug 09 2002 10:19:00 ET

White House and Senate plans are silent about housing the proposed Department of Homeland Security, though the House bill calls for constructing and equipping a headquarters, the WALL STREET JOURNAL reported on Friday.

It would cost $580 million -- more to buy land -- and be ready by 2007, Congress's budget office says. One-time costs for managerial hires and temporary space would be about $150 million for 2003.

Of roughly 200,000 employees, about 8,000 would be at headquarters. A White House spokesman calls building plans 'a little premature.'
