Senate Committee To Debate FCC Bill
Mon Jun 16 2003 10:42:49 ET

Fines for violating Federal Communications Commission rules would jump tenfold and new restrictions would be imposed on those lobbying the agency under a Senate bill to be considered this week, WALL STREET JOURNAL reported on Monday.

The sweeping, bipartisan reauthorization bill was introduced Friday by John McCain, the Arizona Republican who heads the Senate Commerce Committee, which oversees the agency. It is backed by Sen. Ernest Hollings (D., S.C.), a frequent FCC critic, increasing its chances of gaining broader support.

The panel is expected to vote on the bill Thursday, in a session that promises to be a brawl among lawmakers over a number of contentious media and telecommunications issues.
