Bush Report Card: 65% Give Bush an "A" or "B" Overall, 22% Give a "C"

Gets High Ratings on War, Low Ratings on Economy, Jobs

NEW YORK-- In his State of the Union address on Tuesday, Americans want President Bush to spend more time talking about the economy and domestic issues than talking about the war on terrorism, according to a new TIME/CNN poll. Three-quarters (74%) of those surveyed said he should talk more about the economy and domestic issues, while only one in six (16%) want to hear more about the war.

A majority of Americans trust Bush, with 62% of those surveyed saying he is a leader they can trust, while just over a third (36%) say they have doubts and reservations.

Bush Report Card:

� Overall : When asked to give Bush a letter grade for his term in office to date, 65% give him an "A" or a "B," and 22% give him a "C."

Bush receives high ratings on his handling of the war on terrorism: � The War: Half of those polled (50%) give Bush an "A" on his work on the war in Afghanistan.

� Fighting terrorism : Almost half (49%) give Bush an "A" on fighting terrorism outside the U.S. � Homeland security: 64% give him an "A" or "B" on handling homeland security.

The real trouble spots are on several domestic issues:

� Economy: Only 13% give Bush an "A," 33% give him a "B," and 29% a "C."

� Unemployment : One in ten (11%) give him an "A," 28% give him a "B," and 30% a "C."

� Creating jobs : Just 10% give Bush an "A," 26% give him a "B," and 31% a "C."

� Enron : Only 13% give Bush an "A," 23% give him a "B," and 22% a "C."

Poll results appear in the upcoming issue of TIME, on newsstands Monday, Jan. 28. The TIME/CNN survey was conducted by Harris Interactive by telephone among 1017 adults Jan. 23-24, 2002. The margin of error for the total sample is plus or minus 3.1%.
