Infamous San Francisco cat lady strikes again
Wed Mar 20 2002 19:06:01 ET

San Francisco (dpa) - A cat lover arrested last year after some 200 filthy felines were found inside her home north of San Francisco has been evicted from an office where she kept 40 cats in a 20 square meter room, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Wednesday.

Marilyn Barletta, a 62-year-old retired real estate agent inadvertently alerted Sausalito police herself when she complained to them that her landlord had evicted her and ;stolen'' her pets.

Barletta is still facing four cruelty to animal charges from her previous incident in which 196 cats were pulled from her home. Six dead cats, some cannibalized, were found amid mountains of excrement and concentrations of urine so powerful that breathing the air inside the house was considered dangerous.

Her new landlord veterinarian Steven Egri, leased the office to Barletta two months ago but other tenants soon began complaining to him about a repulsive smell and constant howling and shrieking from fighting cats.

Barletta's lawyer, L. Stephen Turer said his client means well and never intended to harm any cats.

;It's her belief that she's trying to help these cats and help them find homes,'' Turer said. ;I'm not being critical of the Humane Society, but if they can't adopt these cats out for a period of time, they put them to sleep.''
