China Refutes Gertz Report on Missile Deployment
Thu Apr 04 2002 10:44:10 ET

BEIJING, April 4 (Xinhua)---China Thursday refutes a recent report of the Washington Times [Bill Gertz] alleging China is deploying CSS-7 missiles on the bank of Taiwan Straits opposite to Taiwan.

A reporter required the comments on the report from the Chinese side and said that the U.S. officials think the deployment will lead the United States to sale Aegis missile destroyer to Taiwan.

''The report has ulterior motives and is to confuse public opinion,'' Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said at a regular press conference. Zhang pointed out that the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan at any excuse is a violation of the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques and interference in China's internal affairs, and will be strongly opposed by both the Chinese government and its people.
