ABC'S JENNINGS TENTATIVELY AGREES TO STAY; STEPHANOPOULOS TO BE NAMED HOST OF 'THIS WEEK'

**Exclusive**

ABC NEWS anchor Peter Jennings has given every indication to top management that he intents to renew his contract and remain the network's top news face, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

ABC NEWS President David Westin has become convinced in recent days that Jennings will stay on at WORLD NEWS TONIGHT, a top DISNEY source reveals.

"Peter's tentatively agreed to stay on," said the source. "He's Number One in the ratings, and now with Brokaw announcing his departure, he will be the undisputed news leader."

[Brokaw edged out a win in the ratings Tuesday night with a 7.3 rating/14 share to a Jennings 7.2/13 score. [CBS Rather trailed with a 5.3/10]]

As first reported in this space last month, ABC asked Jennings to take a cut in his salary, which is estimated at more than $10 million a year.

Specific details of the deal have not been finalized as of Wednesday afternoon.

The top source explains: "The important information here is Peter's tentatively agreed to stay on. And I can tell you, we're thrilled! He's agreed to work with our budget concerns. We just saved a few million dollars with Connie Chung leaving [to CNN]. Peter understands there will be no dramatic increase in pay. We may be able to work with more vacation time for less dollars. We are not looking at any internal crises over this. We're feeling great."

Suggestions that ABC brass want to eliminate Jennings's production unit in a cost-cutting measure are said to be false.

Meanwhile, an expected announcement naming George Stephanopoulos host of ABC's THIS WEEK has become the talk of the network's Washington bureau.

Just as a new executive producer for the program is expected to be named within days.
