XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX TUESDAY AUGUST 30, 2002 10:52:28 ET XXXXX MTV SLAP AT MICHAEL JACKSON: WE DID NOT GIVE YOU 'ARTIST OF MILLENNIUM AWARD' MTV announced late Thursday that it had not presented Michael Jackson with "artist of the millennium" honors at the 2002 Video Music Awards -- only after the pop star believed he had excepted such an award on live TV! "There is no such honor," MTV announced. "It was an unfortunate misunderstanding." "Britney handed him the award! It was a silver with a red bow," a Jackson source fumed to DRUDGE on the morning after the night before. "What do they mean there is 'no such award'... this is no way to treat the artist that put MTV on the map!" Jackson told the live TV audience: "When I was a little boy in Indiana, if someone had told me that one day I'd be getting the Artist of the Millennium award, I wouldn't have believed it. I can't believe it." MTV tired to explain the confusion in a report on MTV.COM: "Britney Spears introduced birthday boy Michael Jackson and presented him with a tiered cake at the Radio City function. She referred to Jackson as 'the artist of the millennium,' and Jackson thought he actually won an award by that name, though no such award exists."
