High-tech 'space' suits protecting Hong Kong health workers
Thu Apr 24, 2003 02:11:11 ET

Hong Kong (dpa) - Health workers in Hong Kong are being issued with high-tech ;space-type'' suits to protect them from the deadly SARS virus, a report said Thursday.

The full-body suits are designed for workers dealing with chemical spills and radioactive substances. They are made of special microfibre and include a hood and visor.

They were issued to two of the hospitals worst hit by the outbreak for the first time this week because of growing concerns over the rising number of medical staff still contracting the virus.

Nursing staff working on SARS wards are receiving two suits a day while doctors discard them every time they finish their rounds.

Hong Kong has recorded 1,458 cases of SARS infections since the outbreak began more than seven weeks ago. Around 23 per cent (335) of these have been medical workers who have caught the virus while treating patients.

The report in the South China Morning Post said the hospital authority had orginally been reluctant to provide the suits because of their cost - 25 Hong Kong dollars (3 U.S. dollars) per suit.

It agreed to provide them when the number of infections among staff continued despite existing barrier methods of paper gowns, visors and face masks.

Manufacturer DuPont sid the ;barrierman'' suits can be used while dealing with chemical spills, radioactive substances and agricultural chemicals.
