Whitman Disputes Claims That She Used EPA Agents As 'Errand Boys'
Thu May 01 2003 10:09:26 ET

In the Upstate Wednesday for an event at BMW Manufacturing Corp., former New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman disputed claims made last week that she had used EPA security agents as errand boys.

The SPARTANBURG HERALD-JOURNAL quotes Whitman: 'I've never used them for personal errands,' she claimed emphatically.

Several EPA managers said last week that EPA agents had, at times, been ordered to perform personal tasks, such as returning a rental car for Whitman's husband after a trip or sitting at a table until the administrator arrived for a restaurant reservation. Also, a 'professional conduct' list was obtained a week ago by the Associated Press, listing dos and don'ts for agents attending to Whitman."

The Herald-Journal notes, "The list said chauffeurs were to only rent a Lincoln Town Car, were only to tune the radio to smooth jazz or classical music with the volume set low, and were to keep an eye out for a Starbucks coffee shop or Barnes & Noble bookstore. The also say the former New Jersey governor prefers to be addressed as governor, rather than ma'am or administrator. She was given this courtesy during the BMW event at which she was the keynote speaker, but she denied knowing anything about the rest of the items on the list. 'I wasn't aware of that list that went out of things that I like and don't like,' she said.

'It's nice. It's great that they would accommodate that, but I never asked for that.' "

Whitman "said the allegations had been inspected and results had been given to the inspector general, who agreed there was no need for further inquiry. 'We're not going to go on any kind of witch hunt about it,' Whitman said.

'What we said is 'Look, if you have problems with the way scheduling is done or if you have problems with the duties, bring them forward."' Whitman was in Spartanburg County for BMW Manufacturing Corp.'s announcement that it has fully begun recycling methane gas as an energy source."
