Russian warplane fires missile into village
TUE Jul 15 2003 12:43:22 ET

A Russian warplane mistakenly fired a missile during training exercises on Tuesday that exploded in a village, injuring once civilian slightly, the Interfax news agency is reporting.

The agency cited Air Force spokesman Col. Alexander Drobyshevsky as saying the missile was fired by an Su-24 that was taking part in exercises at the Kingisepp testing range 75 miles southwest of St. Petersburg.

Drobyshevsky was quoted as saying it was not clear where the missile landed or if there were injuries. But Interfax said an unnamed regional law-enforcement official as saying the missile exploded in the yard of a resident of Ragulovo village, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the testing range, injuring the man slightly and destroying some outbuildings.

The report did not specify whether the missile was fired on an incorrect trajectory or whether it malfunctioned and went off-course.
