Former President Bush To Present Public Service Award To Ted Kennedy
Thu Nov 06 2003 10:30:43 ET At first blush, it promises to be an awkward moment - George Bush saluting Ted Kennedy. That's George H.W. Bush, the elder, the former Republican president from Texas, honoring Edward M. Kennedy, the Democratic scion from Massachusetts who has stood out in the Senate as one of the harshest anti-war critics of Mr. Bush's son, the incumbent president.

But the Dallas Morning News report: This honor linking two of the nation's great political dynasties seems destined to become one of those seemingly improbable footnotes of history. And the show is surely on. Mr. Kennedy and about a dozen members of his extended family are heading west Friday to Texas A&M University at College Station, where Mr. Bush will present him the third annual George Bush Award for Excellence in Public Service.

Former First Lady Barbara Bush said, "It's a little bit difficult, since Ted spoke out rather indiscriminately." But she added, "George felt he deserved it," and she'll be there, too, to greet the senator when he arrives at the George Bush Library.
