Students invent hats to broadcast 'SARS-picious' temperature
Mon Jan 26 2004 21:32:12 ET

Singapore (dpa) - Singapore technical students have invented a hat to alert the wearer and those around him if he has a ``SARS-picious'' temperature, Ngee Ann Polytechnic said on Tuesday.

As part of their final-year project for their diplomas in electrical engineering, the three came up with caps and lanyards that detect suspicious temperatures.

Adrian Phua and William Yohan Liman, both 19, and Zhuo Jiaming, 20, fixed a sensor to the cap that detects the temperature on the forehead. A sensor for the lanyard monitors the temperature at the side of the neck, the institution said.

The devices beep if a person's temperatures exceeds 36.4 degrees Celsius.

An acrylic display glows when the temperature hits a high. The severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) left 33 people dead here last year. The students have targeted their caps at service staff to help them diagnose themselves and warn colleagues and customers.
