Defeated Spanish party to sue movie director over 'coup' slur

Spain's right-wing Popular Party (PP), defeated in Sunday's general election, said Wednesday it was taking legal action against Oscar-winning Spanish movie director Pedro Almodovar, who it alleges accused it of planning a coup d'etat ahead of the poll.

"The cinema director Pedro Almodovar said yesterday (Tuesday) in declarations reported by the media, that 'the Popular Party was in the process of fomenting a coup d'etat Saturday night'", the PP said in a statement.

"In the light of these declarations, the PP will bring a complaint before the appropiate courts," the party added.

Almodovar's reported comments, apparently based on internet rumours denied by all political parties, came Tuesday during a media presentation of his latest film "Bad Education."

"We were on the point (of having) a PP coup d'etat," Almodovar said, referring to rumours that with demonstrations outside its headquarters and in the aftershock of Thursday's Madrid bombings the party of outgoing Spanish prime minister Jose Maria Aznar might seek to postpone the election.
