AOL expects subscriptions to keep falling

America Online is still the number one Internet provider, but its losses are growing.

Its parent Time Warner said Tuesday it anticipates further subscriber losses.

"Over the past year, AOL's subscription trends have been in transition," the company said in its annual report, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

AOL lost 2.2 million members last year, falling to 24.3 million US subscribers.

"The AOL narrowband (or dial-up) service experienced significant declines in US subscribers, which is expected to continue."

The company said responses to the challenge have included offering specialized services to subscribers such as online virus scanning supplied by McAfee. AOL also has introduced a budget-priced dial-up service under the Netscape brand.

"AOL expects that its strategic initiatives, as well as its continuing focus on cost management (particularly involving network costs) and continued improvement in its AOL Europe SA operations, will position the business for growth in 2004," the company said.
