Pentagon Readies Plan For Prisoners If High Court Sides With Detainees

Any day now, the Supreme Court could rule on whether about 600 foreigners jailed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have the right to challenge their detentions in court. If the justices say no, the Defense Department is readying an alternative procedure to decide whether the prisoners, classified by the US as 'enemy combatants' aligned with al Qaeda and the Taliban, can win release from the isolated naval base, Monday's WALL STREET JOURNAL reports.

Guantanamo detainees would receive the chance to plead for freedom once each year in a secret hearing before a board of three military officers.

Under a draft reviewed by WALL STREET JOURNAL, the system being contemplated won't resemble the due process in US courts, under which each side gets the chance to marshal legal and factual arguments in a public hearing.
