'NBC NIGHTLY NEWS WITH TOM BROKAW' PLACES FIRST IN ALL CATEGORIES FOR THE SECOND QUARTER 2004 WINS THE WEEK OF JUNE 21-25, 2004 IN ALL CATEGORIES

According to Nielsen Media Research data, "NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw" was the nation's most-watched network evening newscast during the second quarter 2004 (3/29/04-6/27/04), placing first in all categories. In addition, for the week of June 21-25, the Brokaw-led newscast was No. 1 in all categories, topping ABC by 7% and CBS by 29% among total viewers, and outperforming ABC by 10% and CBS by 35% among adults 25-54.

SECOND QUARTER, 2004:

For the second quarter, "NBC Nightly News" attracted 9.080 million total viewers, 6% (+507,000) more viewers that ABC "World News Tonight's" 8.573 million, and 31% (+2,128,000) more than CBS "Evening News'" 6.952 million. "Nightly News" has now placed first in total viewers for 19 consecutive quarters.

In homes, "Nightly News" was also top-rated, posting a 6.4 rating and a 14 share during the second quarter, 2004. ABC followed with a 6.0/13 and CBS had a 5.0/11. The NBC newscast has now won the last 11 quarters and 26 of the last 28 quarters in homes.

Among adults 25-54, "Nightly News" placed first with a 2.4 rating during the quarter. ABC tied with NBC, and CBS had a 1.9 rating. "NBC Nightly News" has now placed first in adults 25-54 (rating) for 31 quarters (including two ties).

Among adults 25-54 (000) in actual viewers, "Nightly News" had a 2% advantage (+62,000) over ABC and a 27% lead (+610,000) over CBS. Even among younger viewers (adults 18-49), the NBC program easily outperformed the competition, topping ABC by 9% (+195,000) and CBS by 35% (+620,000).

WEEK OF JUNE 21-25 RATINGS:

For the week of June 21-25, 2004, "Nightly News" was the dominant network evening newscast in all categories. For the week, the NBC newscast averaged 8.612 million total viewers, ABC trailed by 7% (-547,000) with 8.065 million, and CBS fell behind by 29% (-1,938,000) with 6.674 million. "Nightly News" has now placed first among total viewers for 65 of the last 70 weeks
