RECORD CASH AT RADIO CITY

Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, battling to match President George W. Bush in the fund-raising sweepstakes, raised more than seven million dollars in a star-studded concert in NYC Thursday night.

Kerry spokeswoman Allison Dobson said the figure, which surpased the 6.8 million dollars raked in at a similar concert in Los Angeles two weeks ago, was "the single biggest take for a Democratic fundraiser."

More than a dozen stars were lined up for the extravaganza at Radio City Music Hall, ranging from hip-hop heavyweights Mary J. Blige and Wyclef Jean to actors Paul Newman, Meryl Streep and Whoopi Goldberg.

More than 5,500 spectators paid from 250 to 25,000 dollars a ticket for the event. Dobson said two million dollars went to the Kerry campaign and some five million dollars to the Democratic National Committee.

Kerry attended the event with his new vice presidential running-mate John Edwards, capping their second day of joint campaigning.

Also on the bill for Thursday's concert were rockers Jon Bon Jovi, the Dave Matthews Band and John Fogerty, singer John Mellencamp, comics Chevy Chase and John Leguizamo, and actresses Jessica Lange and Sarah Jessica Parker.
