Wed Dec 05 2001 16:27:07 ET Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's top representative in Lebanon Sultan Abul Einein has announced that all the Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon are on "maximum combat alert," the Oriental Radio reported Wednesday. "We have put the camps in Lebanon on maximum alert and proclaimed a state of emergency. Our fighters are on combat readiness," the radio quoted Einein as saying. He also urged the Lebanese government to open Lebanon's border with Israel for his fighters to attack northern Israel. Einein said that the Palestinians living in Lebanon will spare no efforts to help their countrymen in the Palestinian territories, stressing that "we shall not stand handcuffed but to defend our people in the occupied territories." However, Lebanon seems not to consider Einein's request. The radio quoted a local political analyst as saying that the call for opening the border will offer Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon an excuse to unleash his warplanes to attack the camps in Lebanon. The Lebanese army has enhanced its patrol and control around the camps since last month. A Lebanese military court has sentenced Einein to death in a judgement by default for allegedly imperiling Lebanon's national security and scheming an uprising in Lebanon. According to relevant regulations of the Arab League, the Lebanese army can not enter Palestinian refugee camps to seize suspects. Some 360,000 Palestinian refugees live in 12 camps throughout Lebanon. |
