Military Family Tax Break Bill Faltering
Tue May 06 2003 10:14:04 ET

A bill to provide tax breaks for military families seemed like a slam dunk just a few weeks ago, but legislators have benched it for a variety of reasons, CONGRESSIONAL QUARTERLY reported on Tuesday.

And, with President Bush declaring the end of major hostilities in the war with Iraq, the momentum to resolve differences over the bill (HR 1664) quickly is dissipating.

A Senate Finance aide said, "We're in a pickle."

Sens. Max Baucus, D-Mont., and John McCain, R-Ariz., "both object to the bill, according to their aides, and neither appears ready to compromise. Though the idea of tax relief for the military has considerable support, aides joke about a 'big ping pong game' that never ends."
