EU downplays western spread of bird flu across Russia
Mon Aug 22 2005 09:12:30 ET

The European Union's executive commission Monday downplayed the spread of the avian flu virus after Dutch authorities ordered all poultry to be kept inside amid signs the epidemic is moving west across Russia.

Spokesman Philip Tod minimised the western spread of the bird flu across Russia, saying the commission did not have evidence that showed the European part of the country was affected.

"The latest information that the European Commission received from the Russian authorities is that there is not in fact an outbreak of avian influenza in a poultry farm near the Caspian Sea as has been reported in some media," he said.

Russia's federal service for protecting consumers' rights said on Friday that the virus had crossed Russia's Ural mountains and that the region of Kalmukia, a southern republic of the Russian Federation bordering the Caspian Sea, had become the first to be hit in European Russia.

Tod said: "We are following the situation closely, but we are not alarmist".
