NBC NEWS 'TODAY' HITS AN UNPRECEDENTED MILESTONE: AMERICA'S #1 MORNING NEWS PROGRAM FOR TEN YEARS STRAIGHT
Mon Dec 05 2005 10:18:23 ET

Monday, December 5 - On Monday, December 11, 1995, NBC News' "Today" reported on three feet of snow falling on Buffalo, N.Y., the U.S. Marines arriving in Bosnia, the Middle East as President Clinton prepared to meet with Israel's new Prime Minister Shimon Peres, Michael Jackson, who was in the hospital after collapsing on-stage during a rehearsal, and MSN and NBC who were rumored to be in talks to start a 24-hour cable news channel. That day also began an unprecedented run in broadcast television -- as it was the first day of "Today's" 10-year, 520 consecutive week winning streak.

Katie, Matt, Al and Ann -- all of whom were working at "Today" in some capacity when the streak began -- have spent the past ten years covering countless news events, introducing the nation's top performers, interviewing the publishing world's most prominent and popular authors, marrying off seven lucky couples, traveling the world, and sharing their life experiences with all of America.

No other morning news program has come close to a winning streak like "Today's." It far surpasses GMA's longest winning streak of 87 straight weeks (1990-1991), and it's the longest current winning streak in all of broadcast television, by any show, in any daypart.

"Today" enters its 11th year in first place with terrific footing. Since the week of October 31, 2005, "Today" has been averaging 6.1 million viewers while GMA has averaged 5.4 million - a significant 718,000 viewer (13%) lead for "Today."

The week of November 21, 2005, "Today's" 520th week in first place garnered over 5.7 viewers. It continued to lead the competition by over 600K. Since the week of October 31, 2005, "Today's" been averaging 6.079, a 718K (13 percent) lead over GMA.

Jim Bell is the executive producer of "Today"
