Beijing to push anti-spitting campaign ahead of Olympics

With two years to go before the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the city is again trying to eliminate the long-standing habit of spitting in public places, state media said Tuesday.

Beijing will set up trash boxes every 100 meters in major streets and provide sanitary bags for people to spit into on buses, taxis and in public areas, Xinhua news agency reported.

In a November survey of 10,000 Beijing citizens, spitting and littering were ranked among the top five most disgusting habits, the report said.

The city government met to address the issue with officials urging the municipal legislature to enact heavier penalties on offenders.

Beijing also plans to amend its code of behavior, a set of regulations promulgated 10 years ago during yet another campaign when neighborhood committees assigned people to catch and fine people spitting in public places.

Other rude behavior cited in the November survey and to be addressed included jaywalking through heavy traffic, pushing and shoving to get on and off public transport and pets fouling the streets, the report said.
