LOST TEENS
With the words of President Clinton still fresh in the mind, "Class of '97,
you're beautiful, go out and live like it," comes a Sunday night horror
report out of New Jersey that a teenager gave birth in a ladies' room
during her high school prom, dumped the baby in a waste bin and then
resumed dancing with her date.
The 6-pound, 6-ounce, 19-inch male baby -- born full-term -- was discovered
at 8:30 PM Friday in a trash can inside a toilet stall at the Garden Manor
Hall, where 360 seniors of Lacey Township High School's Class of '97
partied.
Dateline: Forked River, New Jersey; story quickly sweeping media.
The bulldog edition of Monday's NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: "The 19-year-old
senior even requested a song from the disc jockey while her dead baby lay
in the trash inside the blood-splattered rest room... The tall, big-boned
brunette wore a dark blue dress and looked as if she hadn't a care in the
world."
The prom began at 7 PM, some point after that, several female students
reported hearing strange noises in the restroom, says the ASBURY PARK
PRESS.
The NEW YORK TIMES: "The cleaning lady went in to straighten up the
stalls, and she took those paper towels and soiled paper and put it in a
larger disposal wastebasket... Finding the wastebasket too heavy, the
cleaning woman asked a fellow employee to look inside it, that person found
the baby."
Prosecutors will wait for the coroner's report -- to learn whether the baby
was born alive -- before charging mother with murder or manslaughter.
FOOTNOTE: Broadcast reports in Los Angeles late Sunday say that the
teenager accused of killing Bill Cosby's son and the teenager accused of
strangling a young girl in a Nevada-California state line casino were high
school classmates. KCBS says the two 18-year-olds, Michael Markasev and
Jeremy Strohmeyer, met as freshman at the Los Alamitos High School in
Southern California.
The kids aren't all right.
